Latest progress on the Foshan Li Biyun election sabotage case handled by Lawyer Li Zhiyong: Li Biyun has been released.
The case of Li Biyun, who was accused of disrupting elections in Shunde, Foshan, and has drawn widespread domestic and international attention, has made a breakthrough. The defendant, Li Biyun, has been released by the court on bail pending trial. Lawyer Li Zhiyong from our firm began handling this case in September last year. Li Biyun, an independent candidate from Rongli Village, Shunde, Foshan, was arrested on September 21, 2011, on suspicion of disrupting elections due to her opposition to illegal electoral activities in the district. Lawyer Li Zhiyong was the first in the country to announce free legal assistance and defense for Li Biyun. This case involves citizens' constitutional rights and has attracted widespread attention both domestically and internationally. After accepting the case, Lawyer Li Zhiyong immediately went to Shunde to understand the situation and meet with Li Biyun. Through investigation, Lawyer Li believed that Li Biyun's actions did not constitute the crime of disrupting elections or any other crime. Over the past seven months, Lawyer Li Zhiyong has traveled to Shunde more than ten times to advocate for Li Biyun's freedom. The defense opinions presented by Lawyer Li Zhiyong and another lawyer from Jiangmen, arguing for Li Biyun's innocence, have been highly recognized by those following the case domestically and internationally. Lawyer Li Zhiyong believes that the case is not complicated, and the facts are clear, yet the court has been slow to deliver a verdict. The judges may internally agree that Li Biyun is innocent but lack the courage to issue an acquittal. However, the court must eventually render a verdict, so he hopes the judges will follow the spirit of the rule of law and the call of conscience, clearing the innocent and preserving some public confidence in the law.
