Li Tie involved in nearly 120 million yuan, multiple charges prosecuted.
Li Tie, former head coach of the Chinese national men's football team, has been implicated in multiple economic crimes involving a total amount of nearly 120 million yuan, sparking widespread social concern. This case not only involves a huge sum of money but also the numerous charges against Li Tie, making it one of the most sensational corruption cases in Chinese football in recent years.
Li Tie, born on May 18, 1977, played as a midfielder during his playing career and represented the Chinese national team in the 2002 World Cup. After retiring, he served as an assistant coach for Guangzhou Evergrande, an assistant coach for the national team, head coach of Hebei China Fortune, and head coach of Wuhan Zall, among other positions. He also served as the head coach of the national team from January 2020 to December 2021. However, this coach, who had extensive influence in Chinese football, was placed under disciplinary review for suspected serious violations of the law.
On August 2, 2023, Li Tie was indicted on five charges, including bribery and offering bribes. On March 28, 2024, the Intermediate People's Court of Xianning City, Hubei Province, publicly tried the case in accordance with the law. The procuratorate accused Li Tie of five crimes: accepting bribes, offering bribes, unit bribery, accepting bribes from non-state personnel, and offering bribes to non-state personnel. During the trial, the procuratorial authorities presented relevant evidence, which was cross-examined by Li Tie and his defense counsel. Both sides fully expressed their opinions under the court's guidance. After the trial, the court announced that the verdict would be delivered at a later date.
It is reported that the amount involved in Li Tie's case is nearly 120 million yuan, including 77.64 million yuan allegedly accepted as bribes. These funds mainly came from his positions as head coach of the national team selection squad and head coach of the national team, where he used his authority or the便利 conditions formed by his position to help relevant units and individuals in matters such as player selection for the national team, winning matches, and signing contracts with clubs, illegally accepting property from others. Additionally, Li Tie is suspected of offering bribes, including seeking help from others to become the head coach of the national team and giving property to others.
During the trial, Li Tie made a final statement, expressing his guilt and remorse in court. However, the case took nearly nine months from trial to verdict, far exceeding the typical two-to-three-month period for general cases. This was mainly because Li Tie was accused of five crimes, making the case complex and requiring thorough investigation and trial.
On December 13, 2024, the case finally reached a first-instance verdict. Li Tie was sentenced to 20 years in prison for multiple crimes, including accepting bribes, offering bribes, unit bribery, accepting bribes from non-state personnel, and offering bribes to non-state personnel. This verdict not only demonstrates the fairness and authority of the law but also serves as a warning against corruption in Chinese football.
The Li Tie case once again reminds people to maintain a clear mind and adhere to the bottom line of professional ethics and laws and regulations. Any form of corruption should be severely punished according to the law without leniency. Only in this way can social fairness and justice be upheld and the healthy development of Chinese football be ensured.
