Last week, the lecture given by Lawyer Zhiming received an enthusiastic response. In order to selflessly share his many years of practice insights with more colleagues and to enable young lawyers to gain a deeper understanding of the current state of the lawyer profession today, Lawyer Zhiming once again held a lecture today in the multifunction hall of Guangdong Zhiming Law Firm. The theme of the lecture was "The Essence of Lawyers and the Current Situation Today." The event venue was packed with no empty seats, and everyone listened attentively, concentrating fully, for fear of missing a single word or sentence.
Continuing from his previous lecture, Lawyer Zhiming said in this lecture that the essence of being a lawyer is to use legal skills to help clients in litigation (litigation and arbitration), safeguard the client's lawful rights and interests, realize social fairness and justice, and advance the progress of the rule of law. Because lawyers bear a heavy responsibility, they should work hard, master superb legal service skills, and use outstanding litigation abilities to provide services to society, thereby earning remuneration and winning respect. However, things go contrary to one's wishes. Under today's economic conditions, many lawyers have long been blinded by profit, cast arduous struggle to the back of their minds, and think only of using connections, relationships, and resources to cut corners. But countless examples tell us that this path will not last long and may even be illegal and criminal. Once the truth comes to light, at best one loses one's lawyer qualification, and at worst one destroys the happiness of one's family. It can truly be said that the loss outweighs the gain. Lawyer Zhiming hopes everyone can take this as a warning, adjust their mindset, and continue walking the path of dedication and hard work.
Speaking of integrity and justice, he cited an example. This was a classic case he handled not long after entering the profession—China's first successful administrative lawsuit of "citizens suing officials." At the time, "citizens suing officials" was virtually unheard of. This case meant that lawyer Zhiming not only bore the burden of protecting the client's lawful rights and interests, but also shouldered an important step in China's rule-of-law development. From feeling his way forward like crossing a river by groping for stones when he took the case, to making thorough preparations when responding to the litigation, to living up to expectations when the verdict was won, he vividly recounted the ups and downs of the case, as if that righteous and awe-inspiring lawyer had appeared vividly before one's eyes, inspiring admiration.
