On May 6, 2020, a video online sparked concern. In the video, several men rescued an elderly woman from a pit over two meters deep. It was reported that she was an elderly mother buried alive by her own son.

On the night of May 2, 2020, Ma pushed his bedridden mother, Wang, out in a handcart. Early the next morning, Ma returned home alone. When his family asked about his mother's whereabouts, Ma falsely claimed he had taken her to a relative's house. The family immediately set out to search, and then Ma left home alone.
 
On the morning of May 5, Zhang (Wang's daughter-in-law) reported the situation to the Xinzhuang Police Station of Jingbian County Court. After receiving the report, the Xinzhuang Police Station and the Criminal Investigation Brigade quickly launched an investigation and summoned the suspect Ma for interrogation. During questioning, Ma insisted that he had taken his mother Wang to a relative's home. After further investigation revealed that Wang had not been taken to a relative's, Ma was brought back to the police station. When questioned again, Ma appeared flustered and gave contradictory statements. Under repeated questioning by the investigators, Ma finally confessed that he had taken his mother by handcart to an abandoned grave pit in the Wanmu Forest area of Jingbian County and personally dumped her in and buried her.
 
After learning this, the police immediately went to the scene to excavate the grave pit, during which they faintly heard cries for help. After digging open the pit with all their might, Wang, who had been buried for three days, was finally rescued. Although she still had vital signs, she was somewhat disoriented. The police immediately sent Wang to the hospital for treatment.
 

 
Currently, Ma is under criminal detention on suspicion of intentional homicide.
 
Why is it "intentional homicide" instead of "abandonment"?
 
1. Differences in subjective aspect.
The subjective intent of intentional homicide is to deprive another person of life.
 
The subjective intent of abandonment is that the person obligated to provide support attempts to evade or transfer their support obligations through abandonment.
 
2. Differences in objective elements.
[1] The crime of intentional homicide involves placing a helpless infant or elderly person in a location where they cannot receive aid or are in danger, such as a desolate wilderness or a ravine frequented by wild animals.
 
[2] The crime of abandonment involves leaving a victim in a place where they can receive aid, such as a busy train station or in front of someone else's home.
 
[3] Thus, the core distinction between intentional homicide and abandonment lies in the likelihood of the abandoned person receiving aid. The purpose of abandonment is merely to evade the duty of support, while intentional homicide aims to deprive someone of life, making it far more heinous.
 

[4] In this case, Wang discarded his biological mother in a two-meter-deep grave and covered her with soil. This act clearly goes beyond simply abandoning his duty of support—it constitutes an intent to take his mother's life, thus forming the crime of intentional homicide.

[5] Lambs kneel to suckle, and crows feed their parents in return. Even a tiger does not eat its own cubs. Wang's inhumane behavior not only violates moral ethics but also crosses the legal boundary. From a legal perspective, the right to life is the most fundamental prerequisite for a citizen as a rights-bearing subject; without it, other rights are meaningless. The right to life is supreme and inviolable, and no one has the right to take another's life. Therefore, intentional homicide is one of the few extremely heinous crimes in China's criminal law. Wang is currently under criminal detention, awaiting legal punishment.
 
[6] As human beings, we must possess basic ethics and morality. What makes humans human, not beasts, is our emotions and awareness of warmth and cold in the world. Our mothers give us life and raise us to adulthood. Even if we cannot repay the gift of life, we must never forget the nurturing grace. As the saying goes, you raise me small, I support you old. When we were helpless infants, our mothers nurtured us to grow strong; when they falter in old age, we should take their hands and walk with them into the sunset.
