"yu wei" is not omnipotent; no one is above the law!

Case review
On November 6, local media in Nanchang, in collaboration with the Nanchang traffic police, conducted a live broadcast of a "nighttime drunk driving checkpoint." During the broadcast, a woman suspected of drunk driving was apprehended by the traffic police but refused to cooperate with the breathalyzer test for various reasons. The following day, the Nanchang Public Security Bureau Traffic Management Bureau reported that the woman was suspected of the crime of dangerous driving, and the public security organ had filed a criminal case in accordance with the law. The case is currently under further investigation.

 
 

It is worth noting that throughout the entire incident, the woman was uncooperative. The breathalyzer test took a full 17 minutes to complete, during which she blew into the device 66 times, succeeding only on the final attempt. At one point, she repeatedly told the traffic police, “Call yu wei over here,” and attempted to make a phone call.
 
Late at night on November 9, Nanchang police issued a briefing on the high-profile case of "luxury car driver Sun, who drove while intoxicated." According to the briefing, the suspect, Sun, has been transferred to the procuratorate for review and prosecution on suspicion of the crime of dangerous driving.
 
Regarding who "yuwei" was, the police notice stated that an investigation found that there were six police officers in the city's public security system whose names were homophones of "yu wei," and that none of them knew Sun or had any connection with her. According to the suspect Sun's confession after being brought to justice, she actually did not know anyone named "yu wei" (phonetic), but she knew that the director of the Donghu District Public Security Sub-bureau was named Yu Wei (Sun did not know that Yu Wei had been transferred to serve as director of the Qingshanhu District Public Security Sub-bureau). Her statement at the scene, "call yu wei over here," was because she had drunk too much alcohol at the time and was afraid her vehicle would be impounded, hoping to avoid or mitigate punishment on the spot.

[6] Article 133: Crime of Dangerous Driving
Driving a motor vehicle on the road under any of the following circumstances shall be punishable by criminal detention and a fine:
(1) Racing or chasing each other in driving, where the circumstances are flagrant;
(2) driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated;
(3) Engaging in school bus services or passenger transport, carrying passengers seriously in excess of the rated capacity, or driving at a speed seriously exceeding the prescribed speed limit;
(4) Transporting hazardous chemicals in violation of hazardous chemical safety management regulations, endangering public safety.

 
 

[1] The author's perspective
In this case, Sun committed the following two errors:
 
First, there is drunk driving. This in itself is a violation of the law and a criminal act that seriously endangers the lives and safety of both the driver and others. “If you drink, don’t drive; if you drive, don’t drink.” Such slogans have been promoted for years, yet some people still harbor a false sense of luck, whether thinking that a single sip will not be detected or believing that after heavy drinking they can evade punishment through other means. This is irresponsible toward one’s own life and shows a disregard for public safety. Once an accident occurs, all that follows is tears from loved ones and the shattering of several families. Now that Sun has been transferred to the procuratorate for review and prosecution on charges of dangerous driving, he has gotten exactly what he deserves.
 
Second, there is still a desire to use privilege to evade punishment after making a mistake. After so many years, some people still hope to rely on privilege to back themselves up, which shows that a certain outdated mindset still lingers in people's minds and refuses to go away. There is also a detail: throughout the live broadcast, the traffic police officer was not swayed and firmly replied to the woman, “It is useless no matter who you call,” “Any name you mention will only harm that person,” and “If you still treat your friend as a friend, just cooperate and get it over with.” The fact that he could say this may be due not only to the traffic police officer's own sense of justice, but also to the fact that this is what the hearts of the whole society want.
 
This case should serve as a wake-up call for every Sun. In 2021, there are still people hoping to “call in reinforcements” to “smooth everything over.” Such a mindset and behavior are unacceptable. In today’s society governed by the rule of law, we should all be clear about one thing——everyone is equal before the law.
