Case review
On the morning of November 25, 2022, the Beijing Chaoyang District People's Court publicly announced the first-instance verdict in the case of defendant Wu Yifan for rape and group licentiousness. The defendant Wu Yifan was sentenced to 11 years and 6 months in prison for rape, with deportation attached; for group licentiousness, he was sentenced to 1 year and 10 months in prison. Combined punishment for multiple crimes resulted in a total sentence of 13 years in prison, with deportation attached.

 
 

After trial, it was established that between November and December 2020, the defendant Wu Yifan took advantage of three women being drunk and unable to resist or unaware of resistance at his residence, forcibly engaging in sexual relations with them. On July 1, 2018, Wu Yifan, together with others, organized two other women to engage in licentious activities after drinking at his residence. The Chaoyang District People's Court held that Wu Yifan's actions constituted the crimes of rape and group licentiousness, and he should be punished accordingly for multiple crimes. Based on the facts, nature, circumstances, and harmful consequences of Wu Yifan's crimes, the court rendered the above judgment.

[Deportation]
For foreigners who commit crimes, deportation may be applied independently or as an additional penalty.
 
 
Article 236
[1] Crime of Rape
Whoever rapes a woman by violence, coercion, or other means shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than three years but not more than ten years.
Whoever rapes a girl under the age of 14 shall be deemed to have committed rape and shall be given a heavier punishment.
Whoever rapes a woman or rapes a young girl under any of the following circumstances shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than 10 years, life imprisonment, or death:
(1) Raping a woman or sexually assaulting a young girl under aggravating circumstances;
(2) Raping multiple women or sexually assaulting multiple young girls;
(3) Raping a woman or sexually assaulting a young girl in a public place in front of others;
(4) Gang rape committed by two or more persons;
(5) Sexually assaulting a young girl under the age of ten or causing harm to a young girl;
[2] (6) Causing serious injury, death, or other severe consequences to the victim.

[5] Those who engage in group licentious activities shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than five years, criminal detention, or public surveillance if they are the ringleaders or repeated participants.
[6] Crime of Inducing Minors to Participate in Group Licentiousness
Anyone who lures a minor to participate in group licentiousness shall be given a heavier punishment in accordance with the provisions of the preceding paragraph.
 
 
[1] The author's perspective
Since the incident of Wu Yifan's rape case, I have analyzed that Wu Yifan, from a once hugely popular top-tier star to a prisoner, can only be said to have brought it upon himself, losing his way amid the adulation. In fact, it's not that he didn't want a bright career, but he thought he could completely cover up these filthy and despicable acts, forgetting that there are no walls without cracks, and if you don't want others to know, you'd better not do it.
 
The verdict in this case has attracted much attention, and now it has finally been settled. Besides rape and group licentiousness, there is another point worth noting—deportation. As we all know, Wu Yifan is a Canadian national, and deportation is exactly how a sovereign state expels foreigners who violate its laws to safeguard its security interests or social public order. It is evident that Wu Yifan's illegal acts not only ruined himself but also severely impacted China's social public order. Originally, as a dazzling public figure, Wu Yifan should have set an example and presented a positive image to people. Sadly, he failed to conduct himself well and even harmed others. This time, it not only serves as a lesson for those who harbor illusions, but also warns foreigners who come to China to make money that they must abide by the law.
