Case review
At 9:30 a.m. on May 22, 2023, the Zhanjiang Intermediate People's Court opened the trial for the street murder case that occurred on December 9 of the previous year. At the trial, the public prosecutor from the Zhanjiang People's Procuratorate, the father of the victim Xiao Chen (pseudonym), and the suspect Huang Monan were all present. In court, Huang Monan confessed to his criminal acts, stating he admitted guilt and accepted punishment.

According to the indictment issued by the Zhanjiang People's Procuratorate, on December 9, 2022, suspect Huang Monan, after being rejected in his pursuit, stabbed Xiao Chen to death on the street with a knife. He also planned and began to carry out a murder plot against three former colleagues, which he stopped due to persuasion from relatives, and then surrendered himself.

During the trial, the Zhanjiang People's Procuratorate presented physical evidence, witness testimony, and other evidence, accusing the suspect Huang Monan of intentional homicide. According to the prosecution's opinion, although Huang Monan had circumstances such as surrender and abandonment of the crime, these were insufficient for a lighter punishment, as his criminal behavior was "extremely despicable in purpose, extremely cruel in means, and particularly severe in impact." Huang Monan's defense lawyer stated that they hoped the court would impose a lighter sentence. Huang Monan himself also said in court that if the court could be lenient, "it would also be a comfort to me."

In the trial on May 22, Huang Monan did not apologize to the victim and her family. The public prosecutor recommended the death penalty for Huang Monan. Regarding the motive for the crime, Huang Monan stated that after being rejected in his pursuit, he felt humiliated and "unhappy," which led him to develop the idea of killing Chen Ping. Huang Monan also admitted that he had premeditated the murder of three other colleagues, motivated by his belief that these former colleagues had scolded and criticized him over work and life issues, leading him to hold a grudge. To this end, Huang Monan pre-made an electric shock tool and conducted "reconnaissance." After killing Chen Ping, Huang Monan fled, intending to electrocute the three former colleagues, but only surrendered and abandoned the plan after being persuaded by his sister. During the final statement phase, when hearing the prosecutor recommend the death penalty, Huang Monan may have been "moved," expressing "regret" for his actions.

[1] The author's perspective
Failing to win someone's affection led to murderous revenge, and harboring resentment against other colleagues as well. Fortunately, through persuasion, he was able to pull back from the brink in time; otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable. This shows that emotional stability is very important. Whether in the process of developing a relationship or interacting at work, one should maintain a good mindset rather than resorting to such extreme measures. This approach not only fails to solve problems but also traps oneself in trouble.
