[Shenzhen Lawyers Association] The 8th Young Lawyers Seminar Begins the Journey of Learning at Southwest University of Political Science and Law
On September 11, 2017, the opening ceremony of the 8th Young Lawyers Criminal Defense Skills Training Program (Commercial Crime Direction) of the Shenzhen Lawyers Association was held at Southwest University of Political Science and Law, marking the beginning of a one-week study journey. Liu Linhong, Party General Branch Secretary of the School of Continuing Education at Southwest University of Political Science and Law, Yang Xiao and Wang Tengfeng, Vice Presidents of the Shenzhen Lawyers Association, He Zhijun, Council Member, Zhang Wenbo, Supervisor, and Liu Feng, Deputy Secretary-General, attended the opening ceremony. All trainees of the 8th Young Lawyers Training Program participated. The ceremony was presided over by Wang Wei, Council Member of the Shenzhen Lawyers Association and Director of the Young Lawyers Working Committee.
Secretary Liu Linhong delivered a speech at the opening ceremony and introduced the history of Southwest University of Political Science and Law. She stated that over the years, Southwest University of Political Science and Law has cultivated and contributed more than 200,000 legal professionals to society. Adhering to the university motto of “extensive learning, earnest practice, great virtue, and emphasis on law,” SWUPL alumni have dedicated themselves to the front lines of rule of law development. The collaboration between the Shenzhen Lawyers Association and Southwest University of Political Science and Law in conducting the eighth training program for young lawyers affirms the university’s legal education and demonstrates the great importance attached to the training of all participants. “Once you enter the gate of SWUPL, you are a member of SWUPL.” She expressed hope that all participants would carry forward the SWUPL spirit of “unity and mutual support, rigorous scholarship, concern for the nation, and unremitting self-improvement,” achieving success and gaining much from their studies.
Vice President Wang Tengfeng delivered a motivational speech for the trainees during their study period in Chongqing. He expressed gratitude to Southwest University of Political Science and Law for its emphasis and strong support of this training program, and offered his hopes for the trainees: first, to remain humble—though they are elites, they should not regard themselves as such; though they are talents, they should not be arrogant about their abilities—and to approach this study with a humble mindset; second, to be diligent—the sea of learning is boundless, and hard work is the boat, diligence the oar; third, to have self-respect and self-love, to cherish their honor, and to carry forward the spirit of diligence and eagerness to learn among Shenzhen lawyers. He also wished the training a successful conclusion.
Vice President Yang Xiao put forward four disciplinary requirements for the trainees: first, study hard and make progress every day; second, present a positive image of Shenzhen lawyers; third, comply with organizational management and actively participate in group activities; fourth, focus on cultivating mindset and ways of thinking. He wished the trainees a rewarding trip to Southwest University of Political Science and Law.
All trainees unanimously expressed that they will cherish the learning opportunity, enhance their professional skills, shoulder industry responsibilities, and give back to the industry's diligent cultivation through practical actions.
At 8 p.m., all participants organized the debate competition of the Eighth Young Lawyers Training Program. The debate topics were "The Impact of Online Public Opinion on Judicial Fairness: Advantages Outweigh Disadvantages or Disadvantages Outweigh Advantages," "Whether Lawyers Engaged in Criminal Defense Should Abandon or Not Abandon Other Practice Areas," as well as the cases "Whether Li Ze’s Conduct Constitutes or Does Not Constitute the Crime of Fraud" and "Whether Feng’s Conduct Constitutes or Does Not Constitute the Crime of Operating a Gambling Establishment." All participants were divided into 8 groups and held 4 debates on the above topics. The debate competition was moderated by Mu Qing, counselor of the Eighth Program, with Vice Presidents Yang Xiao and Wang Tengfeng, Directors He Zhijun and Wang Wei, and Deputy Secretary-General Liu Feng serving as judges. The students actively prepared during their limited spare time and delivered a wonderfully engaging and exciting competition, fully demonstrating the outstanding demeanor of Shenzhen’s young lawyers. In the end, Group One of the Eighth Program won the championship, and Zhang Ruili, a student from Group Two, was awarded Best Debater.
In the following week, teachers from the Chongqing court system, the judicial system, the legal profession, and Southwest University of Political Science and Law will deliver lectures to the trainees on topics such as "Key Points of Defense in Duty Crimes," "Difficult Issues in Understanding and Applying Illegal Fundraising Crimes," "Trial Thinking and Defense Techniques in Duty Crime Cases," "Practical Analysis of Evidence Review and Judgment in Commercial Crimes," and "The Role of Judicial Appraisal in Commercial Defense," providing all trainees with a feast of knowledge.
