A new development has emerged in the case of a girl from Weixian, Hebei, who was fed paraquat by her brother-in-law. On October 30, the girl's father, Master Ma, told Red Star News that the brother-in-law, Chen, was sentenced to life imprisonment for intentional homicide.

Case review
At the end of 2021, a high school senior girl named Mengmeng from Weixian, Hebei, was fed a "cold remedy" made from paraquat mixed with water by her brother-in-law. With the help of many netizens and Dr. Chen Jingyu, known as "China's first lung transplant expert," Mengmeng narrowly escaped death. While recuperating at home, Mengmeng needs to take twelve or thirteen medications daily, must wear a mask indoors, stay away from soil and plants, and cannot be exposed to sunlight.

The court also ordered Chen to compensate Mengmeng. Master Ma stated that they have not yet received any compensation from Chen, saying, "They claim they have no money." Previously, Chen's side offered to pay tens of thousands of yuan in exchange for a letter of forgiveness, but Mengmeng's side refused.

"Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China"
Article 232 [Intentional Homicide]
Whoever intentionally commits homicide shall be sentenced to death, life imprisonment, or fixed-term imprisonment of not less than ten years; if the circumstances are relatively minor, the offender shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than three years but not more than ten years.

[1] The author's perspective
The case was ultimately convicted as intentional homicide. Initially, Mengmeng's family did not suspect poisoning; they took her to various doctors without improvement, and it was only after more than half a month that she was diagnosed with paraquat poisoning. This shows that Mengmeng's family never anticipated such an outcome from the poisoner. Fortunately, Mengmeng's condition is steadily improving.

According to previous news reports, the brother-in-law poisoned Mengmeng because he felt looked down upon by his father-in-law's family and had long been in a state of inferiority, leading to a desire for revenge. Regardless of the defendant's subjective reasons, he cannot intentionally infringe upon others' right to life and health. Now, the poisoner has been judged by the law and will spend the rest of his life atoning for his past mistakes—truly a moment of hellish consequence.
