After a customer found a cockroach in their food, law enforcement officers conducted an on-site inspection and discovered 43 more! On the 15th, Yoshinoya made it onto Weibo's trending topics because of this incident.

 
 

Case review
Recently, a Yoshinoya restaurant was fined 65,000 yuan for food contamination involving a cockroach. According to the website of the Beijing Municipal Market Supervision and Administration Bureau, the Yoshinoya fast food restaurant in Changping Outlets, operated by Beijing Yoshinoya Fast Food Co., Ltd., was issued a warning and fined 65,000 yuan by the Changping District Market Supervision and Administration Bureau for violating the Food Safety Law. The penalty decision was dated March 14, 2023.

 
 

According to the administrative penalty decision, the facts of the violation show that the party concerned has no objection to the fact that a cockroach was mixed into the spicy cabbage and pork combo rice with hot braised set meal sold at 14:42 on January 13, 2023. Upon retrieval of the party concerned’s disinfection record ledger, the party concerned has disinfection records every month, and the disinfection companies are Shanghai Jiadan Environmental Technology Development Co., Ltd. and Beijing Zhengkang Hengxin Pest Control Technology Co., Ltd.
 
During the on-site inspection conducted by law enforcement officers on January 16, 2023, which was only 5 days after the most recent pest control operation (January 11, 2023) prior to the report against the party, 43 cockroaches were found on the premises. Based on this, it was determined that although the party conducted monthly pest control, the environmental pest control was not thorough or clean, which was the primary cause of foreign objects being mixed into the food. The party operated a spicy cabbage and pork combo rice hot-braised set meal mixed with foreign objects, with a goods value of 32.9 yuan, illegal gains of 0 yuan (a settlement agreement has been reached with the consumer), and no other specialized tools or equipment.

As a well-known chain catering brand, Yoshinoya should pay more attention to food safety supervision. This is not only responsible to the vast number of consumers but also a key factor for the long-term development of its brand. In this case, although Yoshinoya carried out pest control work every month, the results were unsatisfactory. However, some things cannot be excused just because they have been done or efforts have been made. Food safety has always been one of the key concerns in recent years. Only by attending to every detail, truly putting consumers' health at heart, and implementing strict management can more trust be gained and better development be achieved.
