In truth, there was no road on the ground, but when many people walk it, it becomes a road. Once there is a road, traffic rules follow. But we cannot blame the first person who blazed the trail with later traffic rules! ——Words by Mr. Lu Xun and the author's supplementary remarks. 1. Introduction The French sculptor Auguste Rodin once said, "Life is never lacking in beauty, but in the eyes to discover it." All art, whether highbrow (refined art) or lowbrow (popular art), originates from life. What makes artists artists is their unique vision to discover beauty in life, and then present it to us through various art forms, turning it into spiritual wealth accessible to every ordinary person. Similarly, business opportunities abound everywhere in the world, but there is a lack of eyes to discover them. Entrepreneurs, like artists, have a unique vision to spot opportunities, dare to take risks, mobilize and organize resources to develop and exploit them, creating material wealth for society, benefiting everyone in our community, whether as producers or consumers. Figure 1: One of Rodin's representative sculptures, "The Thinker" Guo Moumou, the creator of the "Sea Palace," was born in 1964 in Rizhao City, Shandong Province. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Shenyang Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in 1986 and immediately taught at the Art Teaching and Research Office of China Medical University, clearly a path to becoming an artist or art educator. But young Teacher Guo was not happy, or rather somewhat lost. On one hand, the pressure-free, unchallenging teaching work failed to ignite his passion; on the other, his youthful arrogance and unruliness did not win him favor or promotion from his superiors. By chance, the school's staff cafeteria needed renovation, and the school leaders, seeing him young and idle, assigned him to oversee the project. Seizing this rare opportunity to shine, Guo naturally poured his heart into it, handling everything from design and planning to construction management, down to the smallest detail. After his efforts, the once dilapidated, long-neglected cafeteria magically transformed into an exquisite, tasteful, and upscale restaurant! Staff members no longer merely satisfied their appetites there but also enjoyed a visually stunning and pleasing feast, all at a very low cost, achieving true value for money. This outcome exceeded everyone's expectations and made Guo realize that applying his artistic talent to architectural decoration could work wonders. At that time, reform and opening up were gaining momentum, and a wave of business and wealth creation was sweeping society. Inspired and motivated, Guo began trying to collaborate with decoration teams on construction projects in his spare time. To his surprise, a few small trial projects earned him as much as decades of a university teacher's salary! More importantly, Guo discovered his true life's value for the first time. In 1988, just two years after becoming a university teacher, Guo temporarily set aside his artist dreams, resolutely resigned, and started his own business, founding Shenyang Fashion Decoration Engineering Co., Ltd., embarking on the path of a successful entrepreneur. Yet Guo always maintained an artist's unique perspective and romantic pursuit. From venturing into commercial real estate in 1994 to investing 450 million yuan in 1998 to build the Fashion Underground Street on Taiyuan Street in Shenyang's commercial center, he aimed to explore the infinite business opportunities of "underground" spaces, his artist's vision shining through early on. Speaking of Guo's deep connection with "underground" commercial spaces, it starts with his earliest attempt to turn underground civil air defense (abbreviated as "civil defense") projects into underground commercial malls. In the 1960s and 1970s, relations between China and the Soviet Union went from strained to deteriorated, reaching a point of tension and confrontation, with the threat of nuclear war looming over China. In response to Chairman Mao's strategic directive of "dig tunnels deep, store grain everywhere, and never seek hegemony," numerous underground civil defense projects were built across China, especially in major cities, on a scale and quantity unimaginable to today's youth born in peacetime. However, after reform and opening up, as China opened its doors and developed peaceful, friendly, and mutually beneficial diplomatic relations with countries worldwide, these underground civil defense projects gradually lost their wartime functions and were abandoned. Guo keenly spotted the business opportunity in these abandoned underground civil defense projects, contracted them entirely, and after renovation and decoration, transformed the entire underground civil defense facility into a beautiful underground mall. He then leased individual shops to self-employed individuals or businesses, creating a unique underground commercial street that became a local consumer hotspot and commercial center, yielding considerable economic benefits for Guo and his associates. This was the origin of the underground commercial real estate model that Guo later replicated and promoted nationwide. The sculptures on either side of the entrance reveal the entrepreneurial artist's temperament behind the project. From "Underground Street" to "Sea Palace," this journey showcases not only the unique perspective of an artist-trained entrepreneur in seeking and discovering business opportunities but also the inherent artistic temperament and romantic sentiment of a successful entrepreneur! Of course, readers must not misunderstand; the path to entrepreneurial success is not as easy and romantic as described above, nor is it the superficial glamour perceived by casual observers. In Guo's own words, during his over 20 years of business management, the first five years were spent in hellish struggle and torment, and he often thought: If there is a next life, I would never be an entrepreneur again, because this path is too arduous. But after five years of hard work, not only did the company get on track, but he also learned and understood business management methods. Through the standardized operation of a professional manager system, he gradually freed himself, allowing him to fully use his artist's unique perspective to find and discover business opportunities, providing strategic direction for the company's development; at the same time, he could calmly contemplate life and indulge his romantic sentiments and artistic pursuits, temporarily suppressed by worldly affairs.
